BriefGate vs Clustdoc: the developer's alternative

Last updated:

Introduction

Clustdoc is client-onboarding software for regulated, process-heavy industries: financial services, legal, real estate, staffing, and accounting firms that need to run the same onboarding checklist across many clients. It bundles a checklist and form builder, sequential e-signatures, identity verification and KYC/KYB, risk scoring, AI-assisted data extraction, a team inbox, and approval workflows into one product, priced per seat with a monthly application cap. It is built around a human operations team running a defined process, with a console for the team and a portal for the client.

BriefGate is built for a different primary actor: your coding agent. It calls define_intake, BriefGate emails the client a branded portal link and chases them automatically, and once everything is in, the agent calls get_intake_results and gets typed data it can use to keep building. No operations team, no seat-based workflow builder, no compliance checklist — you can also run everything by hand from the dashboard, but the product is designed agent-first.

If you are evaluating both for a developer- or agent-driven workflow, rather than a regulated onboarding team, this comparison explains where each tool fits.

When to choose Clustdoc

Clustdoc is a mature onboarding platform for teams running a defined, repeatable, often-regulated client process. If a human operations team owns the workflow and compliance is part of the job, it is a strong choice.

When to choose BriefGate

The key difference: in BriefGate, the agent is a first-class actor, not an integration bolted onto a human workflow tool. define_intake and get_intake_results are designed to be called from code, and the result is typed JSON the agent can use directly.

Migration from Clustdoc

If you are coming from Clustdoc, the conceptual mapping is straightforward:

Clustdoc BriefGate
Flow / application Intake
Checklist item / form field Item
Process template Template
Client portal Client portal (magic link)
Automated follow-up Chase engine (automated)
Webhook Webhook (item.submitted, intake.completed)

Clustdoc's sequential e-signatures, identity verification/KYC-KYB, risk scoring, and AI data extraction have no BriefGate equivalent — if your process needs those, plan to keep them as a separate step. Document uploads, form fields, and payment-adjacent text fields map onto BriefGate item types, including the encrypted secret type Clustdoc does not have. Define each template once with POST /v1/templates and your agent reuses it for every new client. The REST API has an OpenAPI spec at GET https://api.briefgate.dev/v1/openapi.json.
